Swindon Cricket Club will play host to first-class cricket this weekend as Glamorgan take on Wiltshire in an NCCA showcase fixture.

Marnus Labuschagne is the headline name that could be lining up behind the crease at Swindon Cricket Club on Sunday as the professional outfit comes down to face Wiltshire in the NCCA 50 over showpiece match.

Entry for the game will be free for everyone, with the gates opening from 9 am for an 11 am start and there will also be food available from Goody’s Bakery and drinks will also be available, you can find more details on the club’s website.

Following work between Wiltshire and Swindon, on top of the efforts the club have made to support the playing of the game at virtually all levels and disciplines, the venue was chosen to host the match, something that club chairperson Daniel Harris believes is a very exciting prospect.

He said: “It is a real honour to be hosting the game, Wiltshire don’t play against first-class counties very often and it is the first time they have done it in Wiltshire for a number of years.

“It was a brilliant phone call to get to be asked to do it in recognition of the work that we have been doing at the club.

“We have set the club up in a way where we focus on developing talent and spend our money slightly differently to other clubs and it is nice that that can be recognised.

“Making it free was a conscious decision, we want people to come and see it and don’t want price to be an obstacle.

“We have had a couple of players who have been in and around their [Wiltshire’s] squad this year, Sam Wells has come through the ranks and Keron Bennett-Thomas has been around there from a Swindon perspective.

“Their [Glamorgan] squad is full of talented players, they will name their squad on Friday, but Marnus is the household name and whether he comes or not, it will be exciting to have that level of cricket being played in Swindon and to give people the opportunity to see it for free.

“I don’t know if people realise the level of this, but it is like a Premier League football team coming to play Swindon Supermarine, I would encourage anyone to come and see the best standard of cricket that will be played in Wiltshire this year."
