Mark Kennedy remained tight-lipped over Swindon Town’s pursuit of another goalkeeper to compete with Jack Bycroft for the starting spot next season.
Swindon have been looking at various new goalkeepers during pre-season, with Cheltenham Town’s Max Harris playing against Swindon Supermarine after being granted permission by Michael Flynn to seek a move away from Cheltenham Town along with Rohan Luthra.
Then Max Boruc came in to play against Hungerford Town and Swansea City as he pursued regular football away from Hibernian following a loan spell at Arbroath last season, although the sale of Jojo Wollacott to Crawley Town may impact his ability to move away from Easter Road this summer.
Bycroft and Redman Evans are currently Town’s only goalkeepers in the squad, with Evans having just signed his first professional contract this summer after being a key part of the under-18s run to the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals.
Speaking after Hungerford, assistant head coach Marcus Bignot admitted that the club were hoping to bring a player in to help push Bycroft, despite believing that the former Southampton goalkeeper is a very strong option.
He said: “They [Harris and Luthra] are still in our thoughts, this was arranged with Steve [Mildenhall] for the goalkeepers to come in over this two-week period, we had one in our first week of pre-season and they have been joined by the other goalkeeper [Boruc] this week.
“They are all on the list and they are all in for consideration because it is an area that we need to bring in.
“[Are you looking for someone to challenge Bycroft?] That will be the plan. Although they will be a really good goalkeeper to challenge Jack.
“It is like the outfielders, we want to get a squad where we have two for each position and if we can get to that then we will be in a really good position.”
Swindon then did not have a trialist goalkeeper against Melksham Town and again in the behind-closed-doors game against Southampton, with Boruc having returned to Hibernian and been on the bench for their Premier Sports Cup match against Queen’s Park.
When asked about whether or not Swindon were still considering the goalkeepers they had taken in on trial despite them not still being involved with the pre-season friendlies, Kennedy was not giving much away.
He said: “Good question. I can’t really give you an answer on that but in ten days I will explain to you why.”
