The Swindon Town Supporters Trust offered an update on the progress of the Joint Venture redevelopment of The County Ground.

Using money from the Nigel Eady Trust, the club and Trust STFC were able to purchase the stadium as part of a joint venture in March 2023.

The club must have committed to a £1 million development within three years or the council will have the option to buy back the ground.

TrustSTFC Vice Chair James Phipps discussed the progress that had been made in the redevelopment in the past few months.

He said: “I think that it [the Open Letter] has given a renewed sense of urgency to the stadium redevelopment, which is good because that needed to happen and you are seeing genuine works going on like the Legends Lounge being changed.

“You want to come together with something and realise that we are all after the same thing and we might have a slight difference of opinion of how to get there, but we are after the same thing.

“We are still going through an appointment process, the reality is that you need architects and building contractors, but there has been movement on that process since May. It has definitely moved on.”

Phipps added that there were still challenges around the process and beating the buyback deadline that Swindon Borough Council possesses remained a priority, but the Trust continue to advocate for the best possible redevelopment for the future of the club.

He said: “What we are there to do is, firstly to keep the pressure on to make sure that the council don’t have the right to buy it back, that is the number one priority, but secondly to push as hard as we can and also support as much as we can to get the right development for The County Ground.

“Ultimately, that is the legacy and that is the thing that is going to be left for the future generations.

“You want to see things done that will help bring in revenue, and the club needs more revenue as that is something that the clubs that go up have.

“Clem [Morfuni] is not silly and the thing needs to pay for itself, we want to know about funding plans, but ultimately with big developments they have to be anchored on revenues that will flow in from it.

“There is one chance to redevelop the ground and we all want it to get done right.”
