Swindon Town’s League Two opening day opponents Chesterfield could be without several key players when the sides meet in two weeks.
Town will visit The SMH Group Stadium on Friday, August 9 to open the season, with the game being among the first shown on Sky Sports+, as both teams continue to ramp up their preparations for the campaign with it beginning in just over two weeks.
The National League champions had an eye-catching 4-0 home win over Derby County in pre-season last night but the bad news began once the final whistle had blown as it was revealed that several senior players were doubts for the Swindon game.
Assistant manager Danny Webb confirmed after the game that captain Jamie Grimes picked up a thigh injury during their previous friendly with Alfreton Town that will likely see him out for three weeks and therefore miss the Swindon game.
He is not the only key man who will likely not be ready for the season opener as one of their big new signings in Paddy Madden has picked up a long-term calf injury and full-back Ryheem Sheckleford has sustained a hamstring injury which will see him miss the start of the season, whilst Ash Palmer and Tyrone Williams have both been struggling, although are expected to be fit in time to face Town.
Swindon have had some injury woes of their own throughout pre-season, with Ryan Delaney and Tariq Uwakwe both yet to feature in any of the friendlies so far this summer as they work their way back from injury.
Sean McGurk has had a hip flexor that has seen him miss time since playing against Swindon Supermarine, although he has returned to training, and Grant Hall got half-an-hour for the first time against Southampton under-21s after not being deemed ready to feature at Melksham Town.
Mark Kennedy told club media after that game: “I was really pleased [for Hall to get out there] because he has been in for a while and we go off the sports science guys and so he was only ever going to play 30 minutes, but it was nice for him.
“I thought he looked very calm and composed, which he has in training, it is just important to get minutes into the legs and I thought his leadership qualities were excellent.
“He looked like a player who has played at a higher level, that was pretty obvious.”
