Swindon Town have completed the loan signing of Sheffield United's 20-year-old defender Miguel Freckleton for next season.

Freckleton joins Town on a loan deal for next season having impressed at National League level with Wealdstone, Yeovil Town, and Chesterfield before now making the step up to League Two.

The 20-year-old is six-foot-three and is predominantly a centre-back, but has also been used as a left-back and also in midfield during his various loan spells in the National League during the last three campaigns along with performing for Sheffield United's academy sides as he has progressed through their youth ranks.

He was part of Chesterfield's title-winning campaign last season, making 16 appearances for the Spireites, having also had temporary stints in the fifth tier in the two previous seasons as he gained experience away from Bramall Lane.

The defender will add further competition to Town's defensive ranks, where they have also signed Ryan Delaney, Grant Hall, and Will Wright this summer to add to Harrison Minturn, Pharrell Johnson, and Sonny Hart. He also adds yet another physical presence to the squad with his lofty frame increasing the team's aerial capabilities.

Following Freckleton's arrival, Head of Football Jamie Russell, also said of the latest addition: "We are really pleased to have Miguel with us at Swindon as we believe he is an exciting defensive prospect, which we are looking forward to working with this season.

"Already in his professional career, he has shown great maturity in playing a variety of defensive positions during his loan spells, particularly last year at Chesterfield.

"He has also played almost 50 times in the National League and cup competitions, coupled with earning promotion last season and we believe the move suits us as he has a lot of attributes to work in our system and we also feel he is now ready for the step up into the EFL.

"Alongside being defensively astute, Miguel is a quick and athletic player who is very good in one-v-one situations and is tactically comfortable playing in a back 3 or back 4, which is another important factor to how we would like to play this season.

"In possession, Miguel is going to bring quality and confidence on the ball, helping the team play through the thirds and will bring competition to the defensive unit, a vital factor to maintain high levels of performance across the season."
