Marcus Bignot said that he was left disappointed by the way that Swindon Town played during their 1-0 defeat at Eastleigh in pre-season.
Swindon headed to the Silverlake Stadium having lost just once so far in pre-season, however an early goal by Soloman Nwabuokei gave them work to do.
A first half display that left much to be desired was improved on after the break as Swindon were able to increase their control and energy, but they were unable to create a clear-cut opportunity that would have got them back on level terms.
Speaking after the game, Bignot said that Swindon’s lack of creativity in the game had left him disappointed with the side’s performance.
He said: “On the performance, I was disappointed. It was a disappointing performance, for the players it has been a heavy week in terms of loading.
“It has been an unusual week as the last time we played was on the Friday against Southampton and then this game on the Sunday, where normally you would go from Saturday to Saturday.
“It has been an unusual week in how we have been preparing and they have had more training days, and I think that showed, they were very leggy in the first half.
“At half time, we spoke to them and helped them out tactically; there was an improvement in the second half in terms of territory and where we were playing, but in terms of our raw performance, I am not here to kid anyone, it was a disappointing performance and an equally disappointing result.”
Swindon did not force Joe McDonnell into any saves during the game despite working the ball into good positions, especially during the improved second-half performance, and Bignot said that he has felt creativity has been an issue in many of Town’s friendlies and it is something they hope to address quickly.
He said: “We are not yet finished, it is an area that we have highlighted and it is not like all of a sudden today and we are thinking ‘where has that come from?’ It has certainly been a topic of conversation.
“Hopefully you will see us address that this week.”
The game also saw Paul Glatzel play in a midfield role alongside Ollie Clarke and Nnamdi Ofoborh, with Harry Smith and Aaron Drinan continuing to be utilised as a front two and Bignot explained the decision to put him in that position.
He said: “Pre-season is really difficult and we needed to get minutes into them, so Paul played in a position where we are not really looking to play him.
“It was him doing a job for the team and at the same time, from a physical aspect, getting the minutes into all three of them, because if we went with two then it meant one would miss out.
“That was more of a physical selection rather than a tactical one and what it might look like moving forward or things to come.
“You certainly won’t see that in that way again.”
