Swindon equestrian Tom McEwen has helped Team GB to their first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics in the Team Eventing competition.
On day three of the Olympics, McEwen was part of the team alongside Laura Collett and Ros Canter at the Chateau du Versailles in Paris which secured Britain’s first gold of the games.
The Swindon-born equestrian put in a terrific performance in the penultimate leg on the jumping course to set Collett up to confirm the gold over France. Having picked up 15.8 penalties on Saturday’s cross-country sport, Team GB needed a big round from McEwen, which he delivered
McEwen said to BBC One: "It was alright actually, she was amazing. I much prefer doing it myself. It was class from Laura, poetry in motion.
"It has been a bit of a rollercoaster, I'm gutted for Ros missing out on an individual medal."
This is McEwen’s second gold medal having won the same title at the Tokyo Games in 2021, where he also claimed a silver medal in the individual eventing. He could still repeat that accomplishment as he has qualified, along with his teammates for the individual final.
Team GB have won six medals so far at these Games and are seventh in the medal table.
