Marcus Bignot said that Swindon Town are close to adding a new goalkeeper to help push Jack Bycroft ahead of the start of the new League Two season.
At present Bycroft and Redman Evans are Swindon’s only goalkeepers in the first-team squad and Evans is yet to play at all in a senior game this pre-season.
Bignot has previously confirmed that the plan was to add another goalkeeper to try and push Bycroft on, although maintained that they were still very pleased with the 22-year-old’s performances.
Speaking after the victory over Hungerford Town, Bignot said: “[Are you looking for someone to challenge Bycroft?] That will be the plan. Although they will be a really good goalkeeper to challenge Jack.
“It is like the outfielders, we want to get a squad where we have two for each position and if we can get to that then we will be in a really good position.”
Mark Kennedy then followed that after Melksham Town by saying he was hopeful that something would develop in that area in the coming weeks.
Bignot was then asked again about where the pursuit of another goalkeeper was following the defeat against Eastleigh and he said that they were not far away.
He said: “We are close to doing something. Steve [Mildenhall] has been busy with that, so hopefully that can be a box that we can tick off.
“We are close to doing something there, but it is really difficult talking about signings because until they sign on the dotted line it is really difficult.”
In July, Swindon had a series of trialist goalkeepers join up with the squad in Max Harris, Rohan Luthra, and Max Boruc, although none have been involved in any of the last three friendly matches.
Despite this, Bignot has previously said that the goalkeepers who have been with Town remain in their thoughts even if they are not training with the team.
Harris has been given permission to seek a move away from Michael Flynn’s Cheltenham Town this summer with Owen Evans and Joe Day ahead of him in the pecking order and hasn’t been involved with their pre-season friendlies.
Luthra remains unattached following a departure from Cardiff City this summer and is looking for a move after a loan at Slough Town last season.
Boruc has returned to feature in pre-season with Hibernian but is their third-choice after the departure of Jojo Wollacott to Crawley Town.
