Swindon Town have completed the signing of National League title winner Jeff King on a permanent deal ahead of the start of the season.

King joined Swindon on trial and started against Wycombe Wanderers and has done enough to impress Mark Kennedy and Jamie Russell to earn a contract with Town ahead of the trip to his former employers Chesterfield.

The 28-year-old only has one EFL appearance to his name, starting for Bolton Wanderers against Bristol City in 2017/18 but has had a very strong career in the fifth tier with Halifax Town and Chesterfield, which has included two inclusions in the National League Team of the Season.

Having been mostly used as a right-winger or right-back, King also has the versatility to play on the left and in midfield and has a reputation for goal-scoring, hitting seven in the 2022/23 campaign.

King then helped Chesterfield to the fifth-tier title last season but then left at the end of his contract having not been as much of a regular presence in the team as he had during his first two seasons and now adds to Town’s wide options.

Speaking after completing the move, King said: "From the moment I came in last week, I felt really at home straight away and had a great feeling about it.

"I'm really excited now for what's ahead and can't wait to get going here.

"I want to be helping a big club get up the leagues and that is my goal to be part of this squad and hopefully have a little bit of history myself here.

"I feel like I've got a bit more to give, I've worked really hard to get to where I am today. and I'm really hoping I can do it with Swindon."

King is known to be a dead-ball specialist who scores a lot from free-kicks, so he will be rivalling Will Wright to be first choice on set pieces and be an option to further utilise the height that Jamie Russell has bolted onto the team this season.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender bolsters Swindon's options in wide areas, predominantly playing on the right, but also being able to cover on the left, to provide further cover for Rosaire Longelo as well as competition for Tunmise Sobowale and Joel McGregor.

Swindon have now made 11 signings this summer as they rebuild following a mass exodus from last year's squad.
