Young Swindon athlete Delleah Belgrave is celebrating having been selected to represent England for the first time at the long jump.
The 19-year-old Swindon Harrier will be donning the England vest for the first time as she has been selected to represent England Under-20s in a Home Counties International match at the Thames Valley Athletics Centre, London on August 17.
Belgrave said of her selection: “It was a complete shock but a really nice one. I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be fair and it wasn’t something I had planned for the season but that makes it even better.
“I have been in this sport for nine-10 years now so it is very nice to finally get this international recognition.
“It is really exciting to get my first England vest and I’m looking forward to competing.”
Belgrave’s selection came after she secured a silver medal at the recent England Under-20 Championships at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham when she cleared a legal lifetime best of 5.85 metres.
That was the best championships performance of her career so far, which began at the Harriers in the under-11 Quad Kids section.
Since then she has worked closely with Harriers coach Tony Jackson and, more recently, with Bath-based jumps specialist coach Paul Weston.
