Will Wright said that he had a feeling that he might do something special ahead of Swindon Town’s 1-1 opening night draw with Chesterfield.
The defender marked his Swindon debut with a memorable strike following a driving run through the Spireite’s team to cancel out Armando Dobra’s first-half goal.
Wright said after the game that given his past successes on the opening day of the season, he had a feeling that he might be able to produce something.
He said: “I think we should probably with the chop on the halfway line I think that I am more proud of that, really.
“I have got a thing with the opening day of the season, this is my fourth goal involvement in the last four years.
“So, I just had that feeling tonight that I might get a chance, and I did have one a few minutes before that I dragged wide and then once it opened up again I thought ‘Why not? I’ll have another crack’ and luckily for me, it went in.
“It was nice that it was up that end and I could go and celebrate with the away fans straightaway.
“I am hopeful of scoring a goal like that every week and obviously if it was against them [Crawley Town, his former club], it would be a nice feeling, don’t get me wrong but it is not something that I was thinking about too much.”
Chesterfield were up in arms in the first half when they were not awarded a penalty after a tackle from Grant Hall, Andy Cook was even booked for his reaction to the decision, and Wright said he felt Town might have gotten a little bit lucky with that decision.
He said: “It happened quickly, it was quick but it did look like a penalty, to be honest, but sometimes you need that luck.
“I am not sure if Jack [Bycroft] had it in two hands [for the first goal] but I think he has got a claim there and then they nearly scored from a free kick out wide that I didn’t think was a foul, and then moments before then it was a handball from them that the ref didn’t see, they had a corner late on they could have scored from that should have been a goal kick.
“So, I think that the luck will balance itself out over the season with that kind of thing.”
