Swindon Town came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against title favourites Chesterfield to kick off the League Two season.
Armando Dobra poked the hosts into the lead before the break after a mistake from Jack Bycroft before Will Wright wrapped up the goal of the season award in the first game with a splendid goal to level the scores.
How did the Swindon players do as individuals at the SMH Group Stadium?
GK: Jack Bycroft – 4
It was a bit of a howler for the goal, as a ‘keeper you have to take charge although he did make up for it with a great save from Will Grigg. He was calm towards the end and helped Town weather the late storm.
RCB: Will Wright – 9
Every aspect of his performance was outstanding. Defensively he was always in place and coming up with big headers, on the ball he was calm and always found Harry Smith’s head, and then was a consistent threat with his crossing and obviously a stunning goal.
CB: Grant Hall – 7
This was exactly what Town hoped they were getting. Hall was commanding and dominant at the back all night long and knew how to organise everyone else to stop his lack of legs being an issue.
LCB: Miguel Freckleton – 6
Probably the most nervous of the back three, understandably, but his skillset matches very well with Hall. He always had the legs to stop Grigg and the wingers getting in behind. He can become calmer on the ball but it was a tough environment to make your debut.
RWB: Jeff King – 5
As Mark Kennedy said, the early booking did hinder him defensively and Chesterfield looked to target that by doubling up with Ryan Colclough and Lewis Gordon. Going the other way he put in a few nice balls, one of which was so close to getting Smith to level earlier.
CM: Ollie Clarke – 6
Clarke has boundless energy and it will be very important for Town. After a difficult first half, he helped to push Swindon higher after the break and contributed to the improved performance and his late runs were also consistently dangerous.
CDM: Joel Cotterill – 4
A tough debut for Cotterill. He was under a lot of pressure in the first half and was holding onto the ball for too long, contributing to the waves of attacks. He was better after the break, moving the ball a bit quicker. This will be the learning curve from academy football.
CM: Nnamdi Ofoborh – 5
He looked a bit sluggish for the first half an hour but then he found his groove late in the half and started to show his physicality with driving runs forward. That energy continued into the second half and helped with the greater intensity.
LWB: Rosaire Longelo – 5
He was rather quiet in the first half as Swindon never seemed able to find him in forward areas. He was a little more in the game in the second half and created one or two decent chances but there is a lot more to come from him.
ST: Aaron Drinan – 4
I believe Drinan was in the team because he leads the press but he didn’t do that especially effectively in this game. He never really managed to get involved in an attacking sense either, so I am not sure the big call to start him paid off.
ST: Harry Smith – 6
Even when things weren’t going well in the first half, he was still winning every header and it always felt like if Town could fall on a few more of those second balls then there was something there for them. He continued to be a nuisance in the second half and his work rate towards the end was terrific.
Subs:
Tunmise Sobowale – 5
His energy was always going to be key when he came on and that helped Swindon to disrupt Chesterfield with their high press right to the 90th minute. He had one or two sticky moments defensively but thankfully they were not costly.
Paul Glatzel - 5
Not picking him from the start was the big call ahead of the match. He never really got the chance to prove a point on the ball but his pressing with was what stopped the Spireites ever really carving up the chance that would have seen them get back in front.
Jake Cain – 6
He had one job when he replaced Ofoborh and he did it perfectly. It is a surprisingly bold change to bring on a technical midfielder to protect a point but his willingness to graft means that could be a good role for him this season to help see out games.
