Swindon Town saw a deal for a potentially big signing fall through at the 11th hour last week, according to head coach Mark Kennedy.

Jamie Russell is continuing to look to add quality to the Swindon squad, with a striker, midfielder, and goalkeeper still on the shopping list this summer.

Ahead of the Carabao Cup trip to Crawley Town on Tuesday, Kennedy revealed that a potentially exciting signing seemed to be wrapped up last week before the plug was pulled at the last second.

He said: “Just to help our fans understand because I think it is important we share our knowledge with them, we thought we had a deal done with an outstanding player last week and then at the last minute his club said he couldn’t go out.

“It would have been a really positive signing, another signing that would have said ‘Oh wow, Swindon have done well again.’

“We thought he had it wrapped up in a bow and then at the last minute the club said ‘Sorry, he is not coming out now.’ That happens all the time.

“It is very frustrating, it is very complicated, but we are still trying to bring in reinforcements.

“What I would say to our fans is: we have done everything we can do, we are ready to push the button, we are not holding any deals up whatsoever.”

Kennedy revealed that Swindon, like every club, have experienced some frustrations with the speed of the transfer market this summer.

He said: “Signing a player sounds really easy but it is so complicated it is untrue.

"Football has changed a lot, sometimes the club decides where they want the player to go, sometimes it is the player, sometimes it is the agent, and sometimes it is mum and dad.

“Then there are ridiculous bonuses, I am hearing about players wanting bonuses for getting in the EFL Team of the Week. How about you focus on getting in our team first?

“At the higher end of the pyramid, lots of teams will play people in the League Cup because they don’t want to get players injured.

“There are so many things at this stage of the season. Clubs are waiting on other clubs, some are one in, one out, and then there is agreeing terms.

“Honestly, it is the most frustrating thing on the planet. Every manager is going through the same thing.”
