Swindon Town crashed out of the Carabao Cup first round for the tenth consecutive year following a 4-2 loss away against Crawley Town.

Ade Adeyemo and a stunner from Jack Roles seemed to have Crawley out of sight before Nnamdi Ofoborh and Harry Smith fired Town back into contention, but Roles and Rafiq Khaleel netted with time running out to send the Red Devils into the next round.

So, how did the players get on as individuals at the Broadfield Stadium?

GK: Jack Bycroft – 3

I think that the discourse around Bycroft has become wildly overblown and I believe he is a very good goalkeeper but you can’t escape that first goal. He made a number of good saves but that first goal was pivotal and he has to cut that out now there is a more stable defence in front of him.

RCB: Tunmise Sobowale – 6

I think that the Sobowale at centre-back experiment went rather well. His speed made it very difficult for Crawley to get in behind and he was calm in possession throughout. In both games, there has been one moment when he was caught napping but he did well.

CB: Will Wright – 5

He ended up playing in three different positions and looked confident in each one. We got to see him a bit more as a distributor in this game but I think he is more effective being able to step forward as an outside centre-back. Docked a point for missing a penalty.

LCB: Miguel Freckleton – 7

With the way that Crawley set up, Freckleton was consistently the out-ball for Swindon and he thrived, showing what he learned playing as a left-back at Chesterfield last year. He was a real threat getting forward and also threading balls through the lines for Rosaire Longelo and Jake Cain.

RWB: Jeff King – 7

If I did half marks then he would probably get a 7.5, but that is the coward's way of doing player ratings, so thems the breaks. He was a consistent driving force both with the ball and pressing high and then was even more effective after moving to the left, winning the penalty and then putting the ball on Harry Smith’s head for the second.

CM: Nnamdi Ofoborh – 7

Ofoborh’s new role has caused some confusion but I think he showed why he is playing further forward in this one. His energy for the hour he was on the pitch to press high kept causing problems and he showed some invention in the final third, capped with a well-taken goal.

CDM: Joel Cotterill – 6

After looking a bit frazzled in his first game, Cotterill proved that he is a quicker learner. He was much quicker on the ball in this one and kept it moving. I would like to see him be a bit braver with his passes but in his position, keeping hold on the ball is key.

CM: Jake Cain – 7

He did well after coming on at Chesterfield and backed that up at the Broadfield Stadium. His work without the ball is excellent and he kept making line-breaking runs and combining with Paul Glatzel. With the greater emphasis on pressing under Mark Kennedy, he looks like a useful tool.

LWB: Rosaire Longelo – 6

He was a threat once again down the left. He is a tough player to deal with when he has the ball at his feet and there were a few moments when his crosses deserved better than they got.

ST: Paul Glatzel – 5

There was a lot of good and a lot of bad from Glatzel so that balances out to the middle. Again his work off the ball was tireless, he was finding space in advanced areas and had the presence of mind to find Ofoborh for the first goal. But then again he has to score that chance in the first half and there were one or two other openings that needed to be made more of.

ST: Aaron Drinan – 4

He is getting through the work really well but you need to see more from Drinan in possession. His channel runs are useful but he is not producing in those areas and he has struggled to get into positions to score goals in the opening two matches.

Subs:

Harry Smith – 7

That is what he is there for. He made the instant impact of proving that if you get the ball near him in the box he will put it home.

Ollie Clarke – 6

He added to the energy as Swindon seemed to be on top after getting back on level terms, screening the defence well as the deepest midfielder.

Grant Hall – 5

I remember him making one good tackle as Crawley went on the counter after coming on but there wasn’t an awful lot of defending to be done during his time on the pitch.

Harrison Minturn – 5

Again, there were bits and pieces that he did well in his time on the pitch but did not have an especially strong impact.

Dylan Mitchell – 6

This was a promising EFL debut for Mitchell, he made himself known during his time on the pitch and even nearly scored but was scuppered by a great save from Jojo Wollacott.
