Swindon Harriers finished the Southern Athletics League season on a high with victory in the final fixture to round off a strong season.

Following on from third-, fourth-, and second-place finishes in the previous rounds of fixtures in the Southern Athletics League Division Two South and West, the Harriers were able to finally take a weekend victory on home turf to knock league leaders Epsom and Ewell off their perch.

Having come close many times this season, Swindon were able to eke out the team victory by just four points over Epsom and Ewell and 40 points clear of City of Salisbury in third place.

Joint team managers Luke Byrne and Keeleigh Chapman were full of praise for the team for the performance that they put in to see them end the season in style.

Byrne said: “It was nice to beat Epson and Ewell, who had been unbeaten until Saturday, even if just by four points which only goes to show that every single point does count.

“We definitely have the potential to go up to Division One but this season we just needed to consolidate the squad. Overall it has been solid and there is definitely more to come.”

Harry Ricketts and Billy Dickinson secured maximum points in the hammer while Teresa Iannetelli and Amelia Brandon matched that in the women’s 400-metre hurdles.

For the men there were also A event wins for Jonathan Dumbutshena in the 100 metres, Nathan Hackley in the 1,500 metres, and Byrne in the 3,000 metres and then in the B events there were wins from Fletcher Hart in the 800 metres, Tom Oram in the high jump, Chris James in the pole vault, and Kieran Golding in the javelin.

On the women’s side, Chloe Powell came home first in the 5,000 metres and teenager Holly Scott was on the top step of the podium in the hammer with B victories from Katie Fenton in the 100-metre hurdles and Lydia Rogers in the shot.

Despite all of the individual successes of the team, Chapman was keen to point out the contributions of the whole group.

She said: “From the ladies’ side we fielded a good team on Saturday and covered nearly all the events.

“Once again everyone banded together to ensure that we picked up points in every event even if it wasn’t their main event.

“Hopefully next year we can push on for promotion to Division One.”
