Mark Kennedy said that Swindon Town needed to become better problem solvers on the pitch if they were to fix their goalscoring woes.

Having scored just one goal and failed to create a big chance in their first three League Two fixtures, Swindon have a lot of improvements to make with their attacking play.

Speaking following the 0-0 draw at Crewe Alexandra, Kennedy said that he believed his squad needed to be better at thinking on their feet when they are on the pitch.

He said: “One thing that I would criticise our team for is that we have to be better problem solvers and decision-makers.

“I find that the young lads and even the more experienced ones in the group hang on every word you say and take everything so absolutely literally.

“We were going through our press from goal kicks last night and we had this huge debate around a couple of things that happened as we had four or five presses, three came off really well, and one was a goal.

“Then one of the staff said ‘He is pressing in the wrong area’ and I was trying to explain that football is not prescriptive, sometimes you have to react to the game.

“I feel with our group, it is a bit too ‘What do you want me to do in this situation’ – you have to make decisions.”

Kennedy also explained that he was not pleased with how direct Swindon had been when they had the opportunity to assert themselves more on the game.

He said: “I think that possession would have been a hair’s width either side today but what I didn’t like about us today was for 20 minutes we were very effective in what League Two looks like and we earned the right to play and then we didn’t play.

“Particularly down the left with Frecks [Miguel Freckleton] and Ros[aire Longelo], we have got to be more aggressive in our mindset to want to play.

“I really feel that we have the ability to play and Jack [Bycroft] has got to give it to them and they have got to want it.

“For me, if they don’t want it then throw it to them anyway because they are both very good players.

“I don’t want Jack to keep hitting Harry [Smith] once the game has settled down and we have earned our chance to play. That was a negative today.”
