Ayr United have signed Coventry City midfielder Ryan Howley on a season-long loan after he was linked to a move to Swindon Town.

The Welsh youth international has made the temporary switch to join Scott Brown’s side in the Scottish second tier, having previously played on loan at Dundee FC last season.

However, earlier this month it had been being reported by Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider that Swindon were looking into a move for the 20-year-old.

The Adver understood that whilst there was some admiration for Howley, Swindon’s interest never went beyond that and they didn’t enter into anything beyond early discussions, with him being seen as an option rather than a primary target.

The 20-year-old Welsh youth international has made eight senior appearances for Coventry, making his debut against Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup in August 2021 before getting a first Championship run out against Nottingham Forest the following April.

However, he will now head to the Scottish Championship in search of more regular game time after finding his minutes limited when playing in the Scottish Premiership for Dundee last campaign.

He will play this season under Celtic legend Brown and also alongside former Spartak Moscow and Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady.
