A deal that could see Tariq Uwakwe exit Swindon Town this summer is in the balance following an injury at the buying club.

As we enter Deadline Day, Town are looking to get business done in both directions as Jamie Russell and Mark Kennedy attempt to build the best possible squad to help arrest a difficult start to the season after two draws and two defeats.

As was reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke last week, Swindon are open to the possibility of the former Chelsea academy player leaving the Nigel Eady County Ground before the end of the window.

Kennedy revealed that a deal had been agreed with an unnamed club to see him depart, although an injury at the buying club has the move hanging in the balance and the head coach said that he was not certain whether the transfer was going to happen.

He said: “[Is it looking likely he might depart?] Yes and no. Yes because I was pretty sure that we had a deal done and then at the last minute it changed through not our fault nor Tariq’s, that is what happens in football.

“I have just not had an update on that yet but we did think that that deal was done.

“We have got a couple of things that are in the middle of being done, they are not done yet, one is 99.9 per cent and the other one we thought we had an exit strategy in place for a player.

“That was all agreed but the club he was going to got an injury and then that was on hold.”

Town’s head coach added that Uwakwe was one of two players that he had informed were surplus to requirements this season when he took over and could leave the club.

Kennedy said: “I had a conversation with two players the day I got the job, one was Tariq and one was Sads [Saidou Khan] and the bottom line was that their future lies elsewhere and nothing has changed on that.

“To be fair to Tariq, he has been brilliant, he has been professional and he has got on with his work.

“He has had quite a fractured pre-season with his illness and various different things but nothing has changed on that.

“His future lies elsewhere and he is working really hard to make that happen the same as we are and we will see what the next 24 hours hold.”
