Swindon Town have completed the permanent signing of Carlisle United attacker Danny Butterworth on a two-year contract.

The 24-year-old arrives with plenty of experience of League One, having played at that level for Fleetwood Town, Port Vale, and his most recent club Carlisle.

Despite having been an important figure in Cumbria last season, scoring four goals in their ill-fated attempt to stay in League One, Butterworth has slipped out of favour this campaign and arrives at Swindon to give a new lease of attacking life.

Butterworth had been an up-and-comer at Blackburn Rovers previously, having come through their academy, and Tony Mowbray had been a big fan of his creative ability but he was unable to push into their first team before a permanent move away last summer.

He said: “This move has been on the boil but it seemed to happen quite quickly in the last week or so and I am really happy to get it done.

“The gaffer [Mark Kennedy] played a big part in it [wanting to come to Swindon], he has shown a lot of belief in me and he believes that he can help me progress my game even more and make me an even better player.

“My attacking style is something that Mark liked in how I try and create things for the team and also help some of the things that we need to work on.

“I like to think [creativity is an attribute of mine], I am a forward-thinking player and I like to create things, so hopefully I can bring that to this team.”

Butterworth joins after a difficult season that saw Carlisle relegated from League One and he said that he hopes to prove he is capable of performing at a higher level.

He said: “I started at Blackburn when I was 16 or 17, I had a few years there and went out on loan a couple of times and then the management changed, and it didn’t work out so I decided to move on to Carlisle.

“It was a big achievement for me to play in the Championship at a young age, I would have liked it to have gone differently and played more game in the Championship but it didn’t so you have to get on with it and hopefully I can get back to that level.

“[On playing Carlisle soon] I look at it as proving a point.”
