Swindon Town have completed the signing of defender George Cox following his departure from FC Volendam in The Netherlands.

With time running out in the summer transfer window, Swindon have completed a late swoop for the full-back who has spent time in in the Dutch first and second divisions since departing Brighton and Hove Albion as a youngster.

The 26-year-old came through the ranks at the AMEX Stadium and had a loan at Northampton Town before having a loan become a permanent deal at Fortuna Sittard in 2020 and then spending last season with Volendam.

The left-sided defender has more than 100 Eredivisie appearances to his name but just five in the EFL and now arrives in Wiltshire looking to establish himself in his home country.

Cox is adept at both left-back and also as a left winger and can provide further competition in the wing-back positions at Town, pushing Rosaire Longelo and also Jeff King in that area.

Upon signing for Swindon Town, Cox said: "I'm delighted to be back in England and get back to playing English football again, I can't wait to get going.

"I think playing in the Netherlands for five years has made me more of an all-round footballer, I've learnt how to see the game differently and a different kind of culture of football as well so I took quite a lot from it in all different aspects.

"I'm a left back, which has always been an attacking left-back, I've been known for dead ball deliveries, my crossing and just getting in and amongst the goals and assists."

Head of Football Jamie Russell also added: "George is a player we're really excited by and think he will offer an exciting, attacking dynamic to the left-hand side of our team.

"He's made over a century of appearances in the Dutch top-tier and we're looking forward to seeing him continue to develop during his time with us in the 2024/25 season.

"We feel he still has an extra level of performance he can reach and we hope that we can be the team that brings that out of him to deliver success this campaign."
