Clem Morfuni said that his late increase to Swindon Town’s transfer budget should put the club in a position to challenge for promotion.

Following a busy final week of the transfer window which saw five players arrive at the Nigel Eady County Ground, it was revealed by Mark Kennedy that Clem Morfuni had increased the playing budget to help bring in those players.

When asked about the decision, Morfuni said that he felt that being able to bring in those players would put Swindon in a position where they can fight for promotion.

He said: “When we first got Mark Kennedy in, we talked about the budget and he was happy with it, so we had a recruitment meeting around June talking about all of the players, what we needed, the budget, and what could happen in the January window – so we all knew where we were.

“We found out in the last two weeks that we were close to our budget and the Walsall game wasn’t good enough, we needed a couple of midfielders, a striker, a ‘keeper, and a left wing-back.

“We looked at it and I thought that if we really want to go for promotion then this is what we need to do.

“I said to Kennedy ‘Is this what you need?’, he said that it was, and so we worked out the numbers and I put the injection in. That is how simple it was.

“I looked at the return on investment and for the money that I was going to put in extra and worked out for January that this is where we are going and this is how we will get it.

“You can see the squad is good: it has depth, it has men, it has got permanents. It is a great squad.”

Morfuni said that he believed that delivering a winning team was the most important thing to help improve the atmosphere around the football club.

He said: “I think that to push for promotion, we have got to invest on the pitch.

“We can do stuff off the pitch but like people have said to me, what happens on that pitch is most important and if we are on top of the league and get promoted then it is a different feel for the club.

“That is what I concentrated on. I had increased the budget and I increased it a little bit more to get these extra players in.”
