Laila-Jae Belgrave wound up a great season with two medals in the UK School Games at Loughborough University.
Representing Team Paris – all eight teams were named after Olympic Games cities – the 16-year-old won bronze in the 80-metre hurdles clocking a time of 11.77 into a blustery 2.5m wind.
Belgrave then added a silver in the 4x100-metre relay to complete a fine weekend for the athlete coached by Tony Jackson.
“I think it has been a pretty good season,” said Belgrave.
“I had a good fourth at the English Schools Championships and now this third at the UK Schools’, which I think I can call my first international medal!”
In addition to the medals Laila-Jae also relished the opportunity of competing in the biggest event of her young career so far.
“It was just amazing, a great experience and it was good to meet so many new people from other sports,” added Belgrave.
Belgrave’s time was her third fastest of the season behind her personal best of 11.64 which puts her tenth in the UK under-17 Rankings and number one in the South West. That time was also a club record, eclipsing Keeleigh Chapman’s 11.67 which she ran at Gateshead 13 years ago.
