In their last seven league meetings, the teams have alternated wins, with Newport County winning the most recent encounter 2-1 in February.
An eyewitness claimed the police presence at the meeting between the two League Two sides was not especially heavy this year relative to any other home match.
Swindon vs Newport has historically been a game to spark high emotion, with chairs being thrown outside a pub in Newport meet last year, with one arrest for affray.
When Newport visited the County Ground in 2023 fans were given a police escort and the year before in 2022 fans were kept apart by a reportedly “huge” number of police officers.
In 2019 police claimed up to 30 Town fans confronted Newport supporters on Fleming Way.
The last reported physical altercation was in 2017 when four Town fans were sentenced after a brawl erupted at a Fleet Street pub.
