A FUNDRAISER to support the family of former Shrivenham player Jack Badger, who has died aged 24, surpassed more than £18,000.

His current football club, Abingdon United announced the death of Badger in a social media post yesterday, paying tribute to a ‘character on and off the pitch’.

United launched a fundraiser via GoFundMe, and upon publication earlier this morning, it had raised more than £15,700 from 521 donations.

The fundraiser had an initial target of £1,000, but that was eclipsed in no time at all.

On the GoFundMe page, the club wrote: “We at Abingdon United are saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our player and friend Jack Badger.

“We hope to raise funds to help towards funeral/memorial costs and his daughter at this difficult time.

United also posted online: “Jack’s passing has left a profound void in our club and community. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Jack’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.

“He will be remembered not only for his skill and dedication on the pitch, but for his kindness and spirit off it.

“Abingdon United will be offering support to all players and members of our community during this incredibly difficult time."
