Port Vale boss Darren Moore said that league position counts for very little in League Two ahead of facing Swindon Town this weekend.

Swindon go in search of their first away win of the season at Vale Park this Saturday having drawn every game on the road to start the new campaign.

Vale have had a better start to proceedings, sitting ninth in the embryonic table, just two points outside the top seven and having been undefeated in their last three games as they adjust to life back in the fourth tier after relegation last season.

The Valiants have also been one of the most entertaining sides in the division so far, having scored 11 and conceded ten in their opening seven matches, coming up against a Swindon side that have at times struggled in front of goal.

Despite Swindon currently sitting towards the bottom of the table with only Morecambe, Accrington Stanley, and Carlisle United beneath them, Moore said that he was wary of the possibility of playing any team at this level with every side capable of pulling a surprise.

Speaking to club media, he said: “I think that hopefully it [Vale’s 2-2 draw with Accrington last week] illustrates to everybody what this division is about.

“What your mental and psychological approach will take when you look at the table and think about a team down the bottom that a team towards the top must be better because they are at the top, it goes to show on the day that you can split hairs.

“That is this division. Whether you are playing a so-called team at the top or a team at the bottom, you have to go with the same approach in terms of performing at the very highest level.

“A lot of that can be controlled in the mind, not just controlled in the minds of the players but around the arena as well.

“What we have to quickly get into our minds is that regardless of the team’s position in the league, they always turn out to be tough games and they are games that take the absolute maximum focus, detail, and intention to do your job right in- and our-of-possession in order to try and gain a result.

“Most of the results we have gained this season have had huge elements of those qualities within them which has gotten us the three points.”
