Former Swindon forward Nile Ranger believes he still has one big move left in his despite having "messed up" his career.

The London-born striker joined the Robins in the summer of 2013 on a one-year deal following his contract at Newcastle being mutually terminated.

During his time at SN1, he scored 10 goals in all competitions but his spell was hindered by legal issues and constant absences during training which saw him leave the club in May 2014.

Now with seventh-tier Kettering Town, Ranger has reflected on his career in an interview with the BBC and has claimed that he ‘messed up’ following the mistakes he made in his professional career.

He was offered terms to join Swindon in 2008 as a 17-year-old after a successful trial period but the Magpies were also impressed, so he opted for their two-year contract and a £20,000 signing-on fee.

"Looking back, I've realised the many silly decisions that led to the situations I found myself in. I messed up.

“Moving to Newcastle, in my head I thought 'I've made it’”.

He left for the north-east in hope of making a name for himself and putting any previous problems behind him but it did not work out for him and he’s spiralled down the English football pyramid ever since.

Ranger since appeared for Blackpool, Southend United, Spalding United and Boreham Wood as he now finds himself in the Southern Central Premier League.

He founded his own football academy in 2021 which delivers weekly elite training to children aged 4-17 years old and has spoken to students about his career, telling them not to make the same mistakes he made.

Currently playing in front of an average crowd of 1,004, he feels that he could ‘roll the dice’ once more and possibly return to the full-time game at the age of 33.

"I could play in any team at my age if I'm fit - any team," he said.

"It has to be a fit me, not a rusty me. But the rust is coming off.

"I still feel there is one big move left in me. I'm going to roll the dice one more time."

He has scored six goals in five appearances for his new side who play in the same tier as Swindon Supermarine, but he acknowledges that there will always be that feeling of regret as he wonders what could have been.
