This has been another in an increasingly long list of dramatic weeks at Swindon Town both on and off the pitch, but where has it left us?

From TrustSTFC again reiterating their frustration with the ownership, to boos for the players after a drab performance against Harrogate Town, to the breakthrough of the next academy crop on Tuesday, to a personal statement from Clem Morfuni on Wednesday.

Wednesday afternoon felt like a seminal moment in a tumultuous two years at the club, after Morfuni was met with applause when he said he wasn’t selling a month ago, his next public statement was not met with the same kind of adulation.

The owner’s statement or tirade, depending on your point of view, set out a lot of points but the overwhelming fan reaction has made it clear that they haven’t turned up to hear the same old hits and speaking to those far smarter than myself indicated that it came off like it came from a place of desperation.

The immediate ramifications don’t seem to be especially seismic, TrustSTFC were not looking to burn bridges, only to turn up the heat in the hope that their suggestions could be listened to. Civil War? Perhaps not. Or not yet.

Looking down the road, this feels like a far bigger moment. Morfuni has consistently been genial and fairly measured in his personal communications but this was a notable tone shift. If the goal was to win people back then he may have to go back to relying on the Opta Expected Points table to be prescient with results working as make-up over the lines of strain. This may well be how he feels but in a tense scenario when many fans already feel alienated and under-appreciated, you can’t yell back “Why are you so ungrateful?”

The question becomes, is a for sale sign being put up outside? Nobody seems happy in this marriage anymore, it seemed fun when this Australian saviour picked the fanbase up at their lowest moment with a cheeky smile, poured them a pint, put on a funny hat, and showed a glimpse of a life of excitement and fun trips to locations like the playoffs. But are the skin-tight football shirts quite as sexy anymore? Is Morfuni getting the love he wants in return? You can stay around hoping it is better for the kids (The Nigel Eady County Ground) to develop with both parties staying there but will those corporate boxes be everything they can be if there’s muffled fighting going on just about in earshot? Would a new Town End be better adjusted if there was love helping to nurture it?

For his part, Morfuni remains steadfast that although he doesn’t want to sell he would be happy to if the right offer came in and the Trust say no such party exists at this juncture. And so we plod on.

The message remains that if things can get better then a rapprochement is more than possible. A healthy club environment where each aspect has the necessary skills and expertise to do a good job and departments bounce off one another is the easiest way to produce consistent results. What looks to be the third straight season of the on-pitch stuff heading in the wrong direction would indicate that this might not presently exist and that has to change first.

The Trust has twice had its say on what is needed and has been pretty clear. We reach a moment where either that message is heard and the ship avoids hitting a bigger rock or this really does become untenable for everyone and a divorce amicable or otherwise is truly inevitable.
