Police have ramped up their patrols in Swindon as the Robins take on Gillingham at the County Ground this afternoon.

Officers were stood outside Swindon train station opposite the Great Western pub and on the route to County Ground ahead of kick-off at 3pm.

It has been an eventful week for Swindon Town after Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat in Salford, the sacking of head coach Mark Kennedy and appointment of new manager Ian Holloway.

As rivals since 1979, the match was set to be a heated one, but the high police presence is to ensure that all fans are able to enjoy the game and help Gillingham fans to get home safely.

Last month officers waited outside the train station to oversee the arrival of Newport fans, which has historically sparked high emotions.

When Newport visited the County Ground in 2023 fans were given a police escort and the last reported physical altercation in 2017 saw four Town fans sentenced following a brawl at a Fleet Street pub.
