Another season and another mixed week - from the dire and boring on Saturday to the impressive and exciting on Tuesday night.
I don’t want to dwell on the game on Saturday because it had nothing in it and the injuries to the MK players took all the energy out of the game. But Tuesday night was the complete opposite.
The players looked hungry and up for the game, the crowd was fantastic right through - I haven’t heard the Town End and the stadium in general that noisy for years.
That definitely transferred onto the pitch, one area of our game that has improved so much from last season is the set pieces.
The corners and free-kicks were so much better from past years, and that improvement was the reason for the goal.
Another difference you see straight away is the improvement in defence. Gordon Greer and Sean Morrison were excellent from start to finish and the full-backs were good going forward too.
In the past you were always a little nervous when the full-backs attacked because the centre backs weren’t always good enough to cover in case the opposition counter-attacked, but now I have full confidence in Greer, Morrison and Scott Cuthbert.
Again we played so much better after we were positive right from the start, getting Anthony McNamee and Tope Obadeyi involved in mostly all our attacking play.
Southampton did contribute to their own downfall and played like they weren’t interested, but if we play with that much passion and energy in most matches this season we will definitely be there or a thereabouts at the end of the season Obadeyi had an impressive first start for Town but he can’t show what he can really do until they play him in his natural position.
He did show now and again that he might be one to look out for if he gets a decent run of games and a chance to show what he can do.
If we can take that same sort of performance to Oldham tomorrow we will come back from the north with three points.
