ANTHONY McNamee insists he has no axe to grind with former mentor Aidy Boothroyd for scrapping his Premier League dream, as Town’s wide man continues to thrive on regular game time.
The 26-year-old swapped Watford for Swindon in January 2008 after falling out of favour with then-Hornets boss Boothroyd, despite helping his old employers to the top flight and playing 10 times during their season in the big time.
However, McNamee has only good things to say about his ex-boss - who is now in charge of tomorrow’s opponenets Colchester United - and believes stepping down to League One helped put his career back on track.
“It was disappointing, but it was a point in my career when I needed to move on to play regular football,” admitted McNamee on his switch.
“I’ve come here, played games almost every week and it was a good move because as a footballer you want to play week in, week out.
“There’s no point being at a big club and just sitting around because before you know it your career’s gone and you haven’t played many games.
“My old manager Aidy Boothroyd is now down at Colchester so I can’t wait to go up against him this weekend.
“I played underneath him for two-and-a-half seasons and he’s a very good manager who’s really enthusiastic about what he does.
“When Watford were in the Premier League it was really good and I really enjoyed that season. I wish I could have played a bit more but it was still enjoyable.”
This season McNamee has been mainly deployed on the left side of Town’s three-pronged attack, with impressive results as they snuck into the top six last weekend.
And the London-born player is clearly enjoying his football.
“We’ve had some good results recently and are doing well in the league, and that’s the main thing that we want from our football,” he said.
“Everyone enjoys being at least in the top half of the table and hopefully we can stay there now.
“A lot has changed over the summer here but we’ve still got a strong team and the results are showing that.”
McNamee has been the subject of recent speculation regarding his Town future and a possible switch to League One rivals Norwich.
But the winger says he has received no contact about any transfer and is more than happy to stay put.
“If it’s true, that’s between both clubs and I can’t do anything about it until I’ve been told otherwise,“ said McNamee about the rumours.
“It’s always nice to be talked about because it means you must be doing something right, but I’m happy here.
“We’re winning, playing well and everything is going well, so why would I not be?”
