MARK Devlin believes Dennis Wise has accepted the biggest challenge of his distinguished career and insists Town's ambition does not outweigh its capacity to deliver.

The club's new chief executive has looked into the eyes of his new management team and senses a hunger to succeed.

And he is adamant the pair are ready to face the warts and all' reality of life as a League Two club.

Devlin said: "In the interview with Dennis, and no disrespect, the issue of that trip to Accrington Stanley came up.

"I looked him in the eye and he made it quite clear that this was a case of sleeves needing to be rolled up. He's no fancy Dan.

"We are where we are for a reason and there is no easy solution to climbing our way back."

And Devlin insists the arrival of Wise and Poyet is not another example of the club adopting a buy now, pay later' approach, a route that has so nearly proved fatal in the past.

The majority of supporters appear to have welcomed the duo's arrival although some have voiced concerns over a repeat of the Neil Ruddock fiasco.

Devlin said: "That was at a time when the club was pretty much out on its feet.

"Finances were not in place to meet all the matters the club was facing.

"We will try and support Dennis as best we can but without returning the club to the brink of oblivion.

"We believe we have shown ambition by making this move but we are also a business and one which has to adopt a sensible approach.

"Both Dennis and Gus have been very positive about the challenges they will face here at the club.

"They've already spoken about some of the plans to us and their approach has been refreshing and exciting.

"Personally, I feel it's a shot in the arm for the club and I'm sure both Dennis and Gus see it as a great opportunity as well.

"I can't speak for him in that sense but despite a career playing at the highest level, I would think this would be one of, if not the biggest challenge of his career.

"And having been in the game a long time, Dennis has built up numerous contacts and I'm sure he'll be looking to utilise those to help take the club forward.

"He is positive, excited and very, very driven."
