DENNIS Wise has already spoken to Mark Devlin about half a dozen transfer targets although it seems the rumour mill is not grinding out names with any great accuracy.

Town's new manager has jetted off on a two-week break but his mobile phone will be almost as hot as the Dubai sunshine.

Chief executive Devlin expects to be in regular contact with Wise but supporters hoping for a plethora of signings in the next few days may be disappointed.

Patience is the key and it certainly won't be a case of a big-name manager simply looking to bring in famous' faces.

Wise's former Coventry City colleagues Richard Shaw, Andy Morrell and veteran forward Steve Claridge (pictured right) have already been linked with moves to Wiltshire.

You never say never in football but Devlin said: "Dennis has spoken to me about half a dozen players and those three gentlemen haven't figured in our conversations.

"Dennis is away on holiday but he's already complaining about how often he is having to recharge his phone. That hopefully tells you how much time and effort is being spent on the search for fresh faces.

"We've already talked wage structures, what's affordable and what's not."

And Devlin has made it crystal clear that not everyone will be welcome in Wiltshire.

He said: "I have every trust in Dennis and Gus (Poyet) that they will only bring people here that they feel will provide value for money.

"We are not going to be a retirement home for Premiership stars who want to earn a buck.

"I think the club has had enough of those, without mentioning names.

"We won't pay those wages anyway and we want people who are hungry whether they're 16 years of age or 35."

There might be a bit more money in the kitty but that doesn't mean all financial sense suddenly goes out of the window.

Devlin said: "Bill Power's arrival to share the burden with Sir Seton is great news for both individuals and great news for the club.

"I would stress that we are still going to be very careful with the pounds, shillings and pence.

"What we haven't got is a money no object' personnel no object' scenario. There isn't a blank cheque.

"We might be able relax the purse strings somewhat and we might be in the market place for a couple of players who might have a fee, something we haven't done since the signings of Rory Fallon and Christian Roberts.

"Patience will have to be a virtue though.

"It's important we get the right people in."

  • NORTHAMPTON boss Colin Calderwood is set to fly home early from his summer holiday for talks with IPSWICH about the vacant manager's role at Portman Road.

The 41-year-old former Town player was not expected back in England for a nother week, but the club have confirmed they expect talks to take place within the next couple of days.
