TOWN goalkeeping legend Fraser Digby would love to see Dennis Wise capture a quality young keeper and keep up something of a County Ground tradition.

Rhys Evans' departure to Blackpool and Iffy Onuora's decision to release Matt Bulman leaves Town with no-one between the sticks.

And while Digby accepts that we don't live in an ideal world, he would be delighted to see another promising custodian handed the same chance afforded to both himself and the recently departed Evans, pictured right.

Digby, three times Swindon Advertiser player of the year, was sad to see Evans leave having enjoyed working with him in training and helped him to progress something Evans himself has acknowledged on numerous occasions.

However, looking to the future, he said: "As I see it Dennis Wise has two options in terms of his first choice keeper.

"You either go for an experienced goalkeeper with games under his belt or you take the route of bringing in a younger player from a club where he's had an excellent grounding, had all the right habits drummed into him but hasn't or won't be afforded the first team opportunities."

Digby accepts there are no guarantees but can at least to a couple of successful examples of the latter.

He said: "I came to Swindon from Manchester United, initially on loan as a 19-year-old, and later signed permanently.

"Rhys had his grounding at Chelsea and went on to play numerous games here, gaining experience.

"I suppose you can use Tom Heaton as another example.

"You could see Heaton had been brought up to do all the right things but needed matches.

"I've no problem if the club opts for an experienced goalkeeper to take Rhys' place.

"Again, in an ideal world if you go for the younger one it it hopefully gives the lad himself a chance to progress, as I did.

"It obviously doesn't cost the club as much money and then further down the line you are hopefully in a position to make some money if he's successful and you are in a position to sell him.

"But whatever you go for, it's obviously important, for the other players on the pitch as well.

"They need to build up an understanding with their goalkeeper."

Andy Marshall fits the experienced' option while Lenny Pidgeley the latter. However, the club have dismissed speculation linking the pair with a move to Wiltshire.
