QUEENSFIELD United will be looking to complete the double tomorrow when they take on Old Town Wanderers in the final of the Adver Cup at Swindon Supermarine’s Hunts Copse ground (kick-off 2pm).
Pete Smith’s men have already wrapped up the Swindon & District Premier Division title and opposing manager Tom Ireson has admitted they go in as top dogs for success in tomorrow’s final. It is a label that sits comfortably with United player-manager Smith.
“I’d have thought so,” he said, when asked if his side were considered favourites to triumph.
“We played Crumpled Horn in the last round and we battered them 4-1, and Old Town got beaten 3-0 by Crumpled Horn.
“It’s probably the first time we have been favourites but I think we can do it.”
Queensfield’s route to the last two saw them beat Premier Division opposition in Moonrakers in the first round, despatching their opponents 9-1.
In the quarters they saw off Nythe 4-2 before easing past Division One outfit Crumpled Horn in the semis with a 4-1 victory.
United have had their core squad boosted by several new players this season, resulting in their domination of both league and cup competitions so far.
Brothers Mikey and Adam Jack, who play up in midfield and up front respectively, have played a big part in their success and are two names to watch in tomorrow’s final.
Extra spice is added to the contest by the fact that three of United’s players left for Old Town last year, in the form of ex-captain Ben Brooks, Daniel Waters and Karl Spencer.
For their own part, Old Town had a comfortable path through the first two rounds, first hammering higher league opposition in Moonrakers 9-1.
This was followed by a 5-0 drubbing of Ramsbury before VBA Rangers pushed them all the way in the semis.
Old Town were level at 1-1 after extra-time and were required to hold their nerve as they came through the penalty shootout 4-2.
Player-manager Tom Ireson said: “We lost the league (Division One) on a play-off so it would be a bit gutting to lose the cup as well.
“I think there were a couple of nerves and we were missing a few players, but we should be back to full strength on Saturday.
“We are underdogs but it’s our first season and the aim was just to get a few lads playing football again, so in that sense, there’s no way of losing for us.”
