JACK Smith admits former club Swindon’s success has taken him by surprise, with the full-back determined to seal promotion at the expense of his ex-employers.
Having been one of 13 players released from the County Ground last summer, the full-back bounced back to become a key figure in Millwall’s drive towards the top of League One.
Smith insists is not bitter about his departure from Wiltshire, but is relishing the prospect of lining up against Town tomorrow at the New Den.
“I never hold grudges against anyone,” he explained.
“It was the manager’s decision about who he brings in and lets go and, unfortunately, he let me go but it’s worked out quite well for me in the long-run.
“I’m not particularly in contact with many at Swindon, only a couple - Craig Easton and Michael Timlin maybe, but that’s about it.
“Most of the people I was closest with left at the same time as me so there hasn’t been a lot of contact with the people there now.
“Being an ex-Swindon player, me and the missus have been saying since the fixtures came out that there’d be something riding on this game and that’s just how things have panned-out.
“It’s going to be a massive game but it’s one we’re looking forward to because these are the sort of games you live for.”
The former Watford man knows he will be lining up against a new-look Swindon side this weekend, and believes Saturday’s crucial outcome could all come down to nerves.
“Could I have predicted them doing this well?
“Maybe not but, to be honest, they’re a completely different team to the one I left so it was hard for me to predict how they were going to do,” said Smith.
“They had a sticky run but then we’ve had one, as have Leeds.
“Every team in this league can beat everyone and that’s really shown in the last few weeks, so it’s just a case of whoever holds their nerve on Saturday now.”
