Swindon Town are no strangers to dramatic final days and are set for another tomorrow at Millwall. With this in mind SAM MORSHEAD took a look at some of Town’s most dramatic finishes to the season.

  • 1964/65 - Swindon go into the season’s last day with the task of beating Southampton in order to preserve their Division Two status. However, the Saints march out 2-1 winners and Portsmouth, playing later that evening, are left requiring only a draw to stay up. They oblige, Town go down and Bert Head is sacked.
  • 1968/69 - Town need a win, and a six-goal swing to snatch the Division Three championship from Watford on the final day. With promotion already assured, the Robins do their best with a 2-0 win over Barrow at the County Ground, but that is not enough.
  • 1980/81 - The Robins survive last-day drama as a 0-0 draw at Brentford confirms their spot in Division Three as they claim 17th spot.
  • 1981/82 - Town nerves are frayed as a trip to Newport County in the final match of the season must result in victory if the club are to avoid slipping into the Football League’s bottom class. Paul Rideout hits the post in the second half, but a late Newport penalty sends Swindon down.
  • 2003/04 - Hartlepool United come to the County Ground with both sides aware a draw will secure the pair a play-off spot in Division Two. Sammy Igoe’s early strike dribbles in to give the hosts the advantage, but Hartlepool equalise to leave both sets of supporters happy.
  • 2006/07 - Paul Sturrock guides Town back up from League Two at the first time of asking after a 1-1 draw on the final day with champions-elect Walsall guarantees promotion for the Robins and the championship for the Saddlers.
