DANNY Wilson has urged one of his players to “become a hero” and fire Town into the Championship.
Swindon travel to promotion rivals Millwall tomorrow knowing that victory at the New Den, coupled with Leeds dropping points at home to Bristol Rovers, will see them sneak into League One’s second automatic promotion place. And while the manager has urged someone to write themselves into County Ground folklore, he also believes his squad should enjoy the occasion whatever the outcome.
“All the players will dream of becoming a hero and dream about being that particular player, which is great,” said Wilson. “It’s like a schoolboy dream to score in the cup final, to score the goal that clinches promotion or score at Wembley.
“It is a dream, but dreams can be realised at times.
“The opportunity will be there hopefully for a number of players, and let’s hope that someone can grasp it.
“If you can’t enjoy these times then you’ve got a problem being in the game. “You won’t have these type of seasons every year throughout your career. That is very difficult unless you are at one of the top clubs where the expectation level is so high.
“We’re not guaranteed that at this level, so you’ve got to try and enjoy it. You would certainly rather be in our position than fighting on the last day of the season to avoid relegation.
“This time has been enjoyable and we will make it enjoyable for as long as it continues, be that until Saturday or the next few weeks into the play-offs.
“We will go out and remember this time, because they don’t come around too often.”
Vincent Pericard is expected to miss out again with a hamstring injury, but one player who will definitely be involved is full-back Kevin Amankwaah.
The defender made unwanted national headlines when the sides met back in October following an on-pitch spat with Neil Harris, which involved alleged cancer and racial jibes from both parties.
But Wilson insists Amankwaah, who has had to settle for a place on the bench in recent weeks, will travel to south east London.
“Oh yeah, of course he will, absolutely,” said the boss.
“There’s no worries whatsoever. That’s history, it’s gone and completely forgotten about.”
