DANNY Wilson believes his Town side are huge “underdogs” to achieve League One play-off success, but insists they will give it everything to finish the job.
Swindon’s 3-2 final day defeat at Millwall and results elsewhere saw them miss out on automatic promotion and finish fifth instead.
They now face a two-legged play-off semi-final against Charlton – a team who just three years ago were plying their trade in the top flight.
And Wilson knows his overachievers will go into the first game at the County Ground on Friday night very much unfancied.
“We will have a tough test against Charlton both home and away with the quality they’ve got,” explained the boss.
“But we’re underdogs and don’t really have anything to lose. We’ve been underdogs all season. Huddersfield, Millwall, Charlton, Leeds – we are complete underdogs.
“How can we not be? It’s obvious and right there in front of you.
“They (Charlton) are a Premier League team, and coming in with Premier League players and Championship players.
“They play in front of 25,000 or something like that every week. We are in there on merit, but how can we be the favourites in a two-horse race with that?”
Town’s place in the top six is even more remarkable considering they had just scraped clear of relegation this time last year.
But Wilson will not merely settle for the play-off semi-finals, warning his squad they haven’t achieved anything yet.
“I don’t think anybody outside of our club believed we would make the play-offs, so that’s why we didn’t shout about it,” he said.
“We just kept it under our hats, kept it within the group, but we knew that if we got a bit of momentum then we had a chance.
“But we want to see it through now. We don’t just want to let it peter out just because we’ve got there and it would be disappointing not to take it further.
“We’ve not done anything yet, and our aim is to get up or at least get to Wembley.
“If we do that then it will have been a great season for us.”
