VICTORY in our last home game against Brentford set up a nail-biting fight for second place against Millwall at the New Den last Saturday.
As always, the atmosphere was brilliant with both sets of fans believing their side would go up with a victory so long as Leeds slipped up.
But in the end it was a bit like the general election two days previously - an anti-climax.
After all the campaigning and debating, the result of the election delivered what many people thought was going to happen anyway with a hung parliament.
And even after our Nick Clegg-like resurgence against Brentford, we couldn’t change the League One landscape as Leeds held on to that second promotion seat, leaving us to fight it out with the other candidates in the play-offs.
Just as the opposition parties found themselves needing each other to form coalitions, we were hoping that one of our bitter rivals would do us a favour.
That wasn’t to be though and I’m now glad that Bristol Rovers didn’t beat Leeds as we would have been kicking ourselves for losing to Millwall.
I’ve played in games like this before and the crowd’s reaction lets you know how things are going elsewhere.
Our fans were buzzing when we were winning and Leeds were drawing, then when Millwall went 2-1 up with the other result going their way, their crowd turned up the volume and the players stepped up a gear.
As we know, it didn’t matter in the end, but it left their supporters with plenty of time to concentrate on giving abuse to us substitutes warming up.
I’ve heard worse, just about, but there was some good banter in there as well. The pie that hit me on the leg (to the delight of the rest of the subs) was a bit of a waste though, as it looked quite tasty!
Alan O’Brien’s lilac and orange boots were also getting a fair bit of stick, and rightly so, but it was great to see him back involved after a season of frustrating injuries.
He’s worked tirelessly in the gym on a rehab programme to get back stronger than ever. Despite that, it was still hard for Dick Mackey and Dave Morrison to look as he sprinted after a lost cause down the wing near the end of the game and then chased back up the park moments later!
We need Alan and everyone else fit going into these play-off games.
Our fate is in our own hands once again and we can’t wait for it all to kick off tomorrow night against Charlton.
The queues at the ticket office have been as long as they were in some places on polling day, and although there won’t be a clear winner on Friday let’s hope we are ahead by a majority on Monday.
