BILLY Paynter has already experienced the new Wembley, but Town’s top scorer is determined to go back there 12 months on as a player rather than a fan.
The 25-year-old front man was in the stands to cheer on boyhood team Everton as they lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea this time last year, but is now just two games away from running out at the national stadium himself in the League One play-off final.
Swindon take on Charlton in the semi-finals, starting with a home clash tonight in the first leg, and Paynter is determined to fire his side to a memorable afternoon in the capital.
“There’s two massive games coming up and hopefully a third to follow at Wembley,” he said.
“I’ve been there as a fan, but never even come close to playing there.
“But we’ve got two games now and hopefully we can get there this season.
“It’s awesome. The atmosphere is crazy and you’ve got flags, balloons and a real party atmosphere. It would be great for our fans to experience that.”
Former Hull and Southend striker Paynter has hit 29 goals this season in the most prolific of his career to date, but the Scouser is remaining calm ahead of tonight’s huge clash with the Addicks.
“It’s the biggest game I’ve ever played in and the chance to get to Wembley, but there won’t be any nerves. The lads will just enjoy the occasion,” he explained.
“We seem to do alright at night games - the atmosphere is always a lot better and the tempo of the play will be pretty high too.
“We won’t be looking at anything past Friday and are just thinking of that.
“We can’t get over-excited or carried away. We’ve got a job to do on Friday night and want to get a handsome lead to take to Charlton on Monday.”
