DANNY Wilson believes Town’s “elation” at finishing in the play-off places could give them an advantage over their promotion rivals.

In the boss’s eyes, Charlton, Millwall and Huddersfield all expected to achieve a top two finish, whereas his Swindon side were aiming for a play-off berth.

And Wilson reckons that sense of ‘job done’ could stand them in better stead than the disappointed others competing for a place in the Championship.

“These games are special and it’s exciting times,” he said of tonight’s semi-final first leg against Charlton at the County Ground.

“It’s an achievement for us that we’ve managed to sustain the consistency that’s needed. That’s ticked one little box, but we want to see it through now.

“When it comes to this time of the season we can look back with great satisfaction because we’ve ended up in an area where we wanted to end up.

“A lot of the other teams in the play-offs with us possibly didn’t want to be here and wanted to be automatic.

“We gave that a good shot but weren’t quite good enough to get there.

“Maybe our elation of being in this spot might just help us.”

Swindon’s league fixtures against the Addicks both resulted in draws, with their opponents netting injury-time equalisers on each occasion.

But Wilson insists his squad have proved they can be more than a match for Charlton’s experienced team.

“There is a great pedigree there with players who have played at the top level for many, many years,” he said.

“We don’t underestimate them, not at all. But they are like many teams in this league and they can be beaten.

“We’ve run them very close twice, although this is very different because of the atmosphere surrounding the match. But personnel-wise we know we can give them a game, and that’s what we aim to do.”
