DANNY Wilson insists Town’s play-off semi-final against Charlton is still “up in the air”, following their 2-1 first leg win at the County Ground last night.

Charlie Austin and Danny Ward struck within eight second half minutes of each other before former County Ground loanee Deon Burton pulled one back for the visitors.

And while Swindon spurned enough chances to potentially put the tie to bed at the halfway stage, manager Wilson believes it may be a blessing in disguise.

“We’ve had some very good opportunities to win by more than 2-1 quite honestly, but at this moment in time I’m very happy to go in 2-1 up,” he said.

“We might have had a bit of complacency at 3-1 that we didn’t want.

“You can think the tie is over when it isn’t, and for all your shouting about and dancing it is nowhere near finished.

“So 2-1 might just do us a favour. It may keep us on our toes, keep us focussed, and I’m hoping that’s the case.

“Nobody can say for certain who is going through because this game is completely up in the air at the moment.

“We have got a slight advantage at the moment. It’s not a great deal, but it’s a slight advantage.”

Top scorer Billy Paynter missed out through a training-ground hamstring injury, and Wilson fears they will be without the 29-goal front man again on Monday for the second leg at The Valley.

“He’s got a hamstring strain and will be doubtful,” explained the boss.

“It’s very unfortunate. We knew it a few days ago, but had to keep it close to our chest.

“When you lose a player of that calibre who offers you all those goals then you are disappointed, but we knew we could cope with it.

“But the boys who came in (Scott Cuthbert, Alan O’Brien and Kevin Amankwaah) – all three changes – were absolutely fantastic.”
