TOWN’S away record this season is enough to suggest the Robins can emerge from tonight’s play-off cauldron in south east London with the result they need to book a spot at Wembley on May 29.
That is the opinion of manager Danny Wilson, who is confident his charges can do the business amidst what he is sure to be a ferocious atmosphere at The Valley this evening.
Swindon played some of their most attractive and effective football in weeks to overcome Charlton in the play-off semi-final first leg at the County Ground on Friday night, and Wilson believes his team are more than capable of reproducing the display and continuing their quest for Championship football.
“It will be the same atmosphere (as Friday) again but in reverse, and it’s going to be very difficult,” he said.
“We’re confident we can go there and play some of the football that we have seen this season and we’ve got a great opportunity to create chances.
“We’ve been away from home this year and scored some very good goals to win games and we’re going to have to do that again when we go there. I don’t think it will be 0-0.”
Wilson is well aware that simply sitting back and protecting their fragile advantage could lead to Town becoming the architects of the their own downfall.
And with that in mind, the County Ground boss is determined to take a positive mindset into the encounter.
“They (Charlton) really have to come at us to get a goal back,” he said.
“We have to expect it. We don’t want it to happen, and we want it to go the other way.
“We can’t go there just to sit on our hands and hope we get a result. We have to be as positive as we were last time.”
After a taxing 90 minutes on Friday, Wilson is wary of having to make the necessary changes to his starting 11 to ensure an aggressive and competitive opening to tonight’s game.
And whilst he rejected claims of fatigue within his squad, the Town chief admitted he will consider a few alterations, should he deem them appropriate.
“They’re not running on empty, but they’re putting a great deal in and you saw how much they worked on Friday,” he said.
“It will be in my mind to put some fresh legs in at certain times. But we’ll see how they are and take it from there.”
