DANNY Wilson hailed Town's Wembley-bound penalty kings, admitting: “We were spot on!”
Swindon triumphed 5-4 over Charlton in a penalty shootout to book their place in the League One play-off final at the end of the month, where they will face either Millwall or Huddersfield.
They went down 2-1 at The Valley last night, with a Simon Ferry own goal and David Mooney's strike putting the Addicks in first half control. But despite having captain Gordon Greer sent off, Danny Ward snatched a priceless goal to send the tie to extra time, and Nicky Bailey's skied penalty proved costly for the hosts.
“I will remember it for a long, long time. It was very special,” said Wilson.
“The application, determination and courage that the lads showed was something else, and we now have the chance to play at Wembley.
“When you go behind and a man down at Charlton things are very difficult for you, but to score a goal in the manner that we did was very courageous.
“We had a go and got ourselves back in the tie.
“Yes, we rode our luck a bit but we managed to get through to the penalties.
“We came to a massive football club and got a result against all the odds. The players were spot on tonight.”
Swindon suffered a huge setback with just 38 seconds on the clock when goalkeeper David Lucas fell awkwardly and had to be substituted, and Wilson admitted the stopper is very doubtful for Wembley.
“I don't know if his shoulder is dislocated but it's certainly jarred badly,” he said.
“He's absolutely doubtful, but we've got no doubts about putting Phil in goal again as he was absolutely fantastic.”
