SWINDON will have to hand over more money to non-league Poole Town if they earn promotion to the Championship in next Saturday’s play-off final at Wembley.
But it will be a small price to pay for unearthing one of the hottest talents in the Football League.
Last summer Charlie Austin was working as a bricklayer while playing for the Wessex League outfit, but a successful trial at the County Ground earned the striker a £15,000 switch to League One in October, which could potentially rise to £50,000 depending on his success.
The rookie made his full Town debut a month later and hasn’t looked back, hitting 20 goals in his maiden campaign. He will start in the play-off final against Millwall and could earn his former side another windfall if Swindon go up.
“Hopefully, I didn’t miss anything in those negotiations. There was a provision, yes,” said Poole vice-chairman Chris Reeves about Austin’s switch.
“I have agreed a confidentiality arrangement with the Swindon chairman, so I can’t say what it is.
“It is not a fortune, but it is enough for us to be interested in the outcome of the final, that’s for sure.
“The best deals are where everyone is happy. Swindon must be tickled pink and we are delighted with the deal we did.”
Among the 30,000-plus Town fans who make the trip to London to see their side in action, will be a travelling contingent from Poole determined to see their hero cap a fairytale season.
“There is huge interest among Poole Town supporters and Swindon has very quickly become everyone’s second team,” said Reeves.
“Charlie was outstanding in the early part of the season before his transfer to Swindon.
“Now with regular day in, day out training, he has got fitter and stronger and that has enabled the talent he’s got to blossom.
“I have no doubt there will be a big presence at Wembley. We are looking to take a lot of supporters up there.”
