NICK Watkins has dismissed suggestions that Town’s change of kit for the League One play-off final is commercially driven, after revealing they will compete in all white at Wembley.
Despite no colour clash with opponents Millwall - who play in blue - Swindon have ditched their traditional red strip in favour of the away number.
But Watkins insists it was the choice of manager Danny Wilson and his squad, and no other reason.
“It’s got nothing to do with sponsorship or money - absolutely, unequivocally not,” said Watkins.
“Danny had a conversation with the players and they decided on this kit. It is as simple as that.
“Remember that we lost to Millwall a couple of weeks ago wearing red. And also, we won in 1969 at Wembley wearing white.
“If we win this time, nobody will care what colour we are in.
“But most importantly, let’s just all get behind the team, whatever colour we are in, and then let’s go out and paint the town red afterwards.”
The switch of kit hasn’t gone down well with fans, but Watkins explained: “It has been filed with the Football League and will not change.
“My inbox has already been inundated with supporters having their say, but we are so busy with sorting out everything to do with Wembley that I cannot and will not reply.
“We are very conscious that red is Swindon’s colour but white is what the manager and players want, and we would never dream of challenging that.”
