WITH the transfer window slamming shut in just five days, Danny Wilson is still on the lookout for defensive experience to bolster his young and fragile Town backline.
But if the performance of Sean Morrison against Brentford last week sets a precedent for the remainder of the League One campaign, the Robins boss will not bat an eyelid should he fail to attract new faces before the August 31 deadline.
“Sean has given us a bit of breathing space that we need in that if we do still need to bring someone in, then Sean will be as good as gold by staying in there,” Wilson said.
“If he can play with a commanding presence like he did on Saturday, what would you want to bring anyone else in for.”
Wilson was pleased by the strength and composure shown by Morrison against the Bees last time out, depicting a player growing in maturity as he held the back four together almost single-handedly.
And the County Ground boss has high hopes of how far the 19-year-old can progress, given the opportunity, and claimed Morrison’s superb display on Saturday proved how good the former Plymouth youngster really can be.
“We think big things of Sean,” he said. “We feel he has great potential to go higher. What he needs more than anything is a run of games and if he gets a run of games under his belt then I think we’ll see a very commanding centre-back with the ability to play the game as well as defend against it.
“It’s not food for thought, it’s something we expected, it’s just happened a little bit quicker than we may have anticipated.
“He’s a talented boy but needs games more than anything at this moment.”
Meanwhile, Wilson admitted the chase for Danny Ward was well and truly up after Bolton confirmed the striker is destined for an imminent loan move to the Championship.
Town have made several enquires as to the availability of the 19-year-old over the summer after he played an integral role in last season’s play-off push, but Wilson said he never held out too much hope of landing the starlet.
“Danny Ward will go to the Championship,” he said.
“We tried very hard to bring Danny back on more than one occasion but we always knew the next stage for him would be the Championship.
“We didn’t want to admit that until we were told so and unfortunately Bolton have let us know on that one so there’ll be no Danny Ward back here.”
