JONATHAN Tehoue is determined to make an instant impression at Swindon and do enough to convince Paolo Di Canio to hand him a permanent contract.
The French striker joined the club on loan from League One Leyton Orient for the rest of the season earlier this week after watching Tuesday’s emphatic 4-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
Tehoue’s contract expires in the summer and he admitted the chance to secure a long-term deal with the Robins played a part in his decision to make the temporary switch to the County Ground.
“I know I need to do well here between and now and the end of the season and maybe I will have the chance to stay next year,” he told the Advertiser.
“First I want to help the team secure promotion and score a few goals, but I would be happy to stay here next season if we get promoted and even if we don’t. It is a good club to be at.”
Tehoue’s departure from Leyton Orient came as a bit of a surprise to some sections of the League One club’s fans having recently forced his way back in the first 11, and he was due to start in the O’s trip to Wycombe on Tuesday night.
But as soon as he knew Di Canio wanted to meet he was determined to make the move to Wiltshire happen.
“I was linked with the club in January but I could not make it then. However, another opportunity came and I took it and I am happy to be here now,” he added.
“The Orient gaffer was not ready to let me go back in January I think and needed me for a bit longer, but eventually I insisted to make the move happen because I was in and out of the side.
“The manager here wanted me and I had the chance to speak to him before I signed.
“You can feel that he has got the fire and the passion. He is a winner, he is really committed to his job and he wants us to be good professionals who work hard.”
Tehoue will certainly add a physical presence to Di Canio’s forward line and while the 27-year-old is well aware he faces some stiff competition for a starting place, he is confident he will provide a different dimension to the team.
“I would say I am a runner. I can be used as a target man but I like to get on the ball and get running behind people,” he said.
“I believe I will bring something different to the team but the strikers here have been doing well and scoring goals, so I am here to do my bit and help the club get promoted.”
