WES Foderingham is delighted to see his decision to drop two divisions and sign for Swindon has been vindicated and has backed the club to be able to challenge at the top end of League One should they secure promotion this season.
The shotstopper was highly rated at Crystal Palace but, with stiff competition for the number one shirt at the Championship side, he made the decision to complete a permanent switch to Town at the start of January.
Back then, Swindon had just broken into the play-off places and a return to League One was far from guaranteed, but an incredible run of 10 successive wins propelled Town into first place.
With a lead of six points that could increase to nine with a win over Cheltenham today, few would bet against Swindon securing one of the three automatic promotion places.
And Foderingham is happy to see that he made the right career move by joining the ambitious Robins.
“I said when I signed I wanted to be playing in League One next season and I felt that the club had the potential to get there,” he told the Advertiser.
“We have a squad here who have gelled together and we are playing fantastically, so I don’t see any reason why we won’t get promoted or even go up as champions.
“And, if I am being perfectly honest, I believe this squad we have right now can challenge in League One.
“I am sure the manager will strengthen again in the summer but the squad is fantastic and if we get promoted I am confident that we can kick on again.”
There are still 12 games to go in the current campaign and manager Paolo Di Canio believes four more wins will be enough to confirm a top three finish at least.
First up is second-placed Cheltenham today and, while Foderingham is expecting a tricky game against Mark Yates’ side, he has faith in Town’s quality to secure the three points.
“They are coming out of a bad run of form recently, they lost their last game and I am sure they will not want the size of the gap to increase to any more than it already is,” he added.
“They are a big physical side and I am sure they will fight for the three points and not just play for a draw.
“I am sure they will give it their best but if we stick to our principles and play our football the way we can we will get the win.”
