SWINDON Town held on to secure a vital 1-0 victory over promotion rivals Cheltenham at the County Ground today.
After Wes Foderingham had saved Daryl Duffy's penalty, Town took the lead 10 minutes before the break through Paul Benson.
They had to withstand some heavy pressure from the visitors after the break but held firm to seal three points that increases their lead at the top of League Two to eight points.
Here are the key moments from today’s game:
Six mins: Scrappy start to the game but Cheltenham are the first to threaten when defender Steve Elliott heads over from a corner.
18 mins: Best chance of the game so far as Billy Bodin brings a high ball under control and is one-on-one with Jack Butland but the Cheltenham keeper blocks his effort. Matt Ritchie then picks up the loose ball on the edge of the area but his low shot is put out for a corner by Elliott.
30 mins: Big moment for Town as Cheltenham are awarded a penalty when Darryl Duffy tumbled inside the area under the challenge of Joe Devera. Duffy stepped up to take the spot kick but Wes Foderingham guess the right way to save the striker’s effort.
35 mins (GOAL, Benson 1-0): Soon after they could have gone behind, Town are ahead when Alessandro Cibocchi swings in a cross that goes all the way towards the far post where the unmarked Benson expertly smashes the ball into the back of the net.
46 mins: Foderingham denies Jermain McGlashan’s low drive after the winger had pounced on a defensive error by Alessandro Cibocchi.
48 mins: Cheltenham keeper Jack Butland then pulls off a good save to deny a Benson volley as play swings from one end to the other in a fast start to the second half.
54 mins: Duffy should really have done better when he rises to meet Marlon Pack’s cross but the striker directs a soft header straight at Foderingham.
65 mins: Town having to defend a bit but they get forward when Benson does well to win possession and he passes to Ritchie, but the winger’s effort is well over the bar.
80 mins: Cheltenham have been dominating and they have a chance when Duffy is put through on goal, but Foderingham races off his line to bravely smother the ball at the striker’s freet.
94 mins: Town really hanging on and the visitors have a last throw of the dice with a corner but fortunately for the hosts, Foderingham manages to collect the ball in the area.
